NHS Mental Health Training

Background

York Consulting was commissioned to undertaken this impact evaluation by NHS Health Scotland in 2005. The aim was to assess the effectiveness and appropriateness of the pilot mental health in the workplace training initiative. Our methodology addressed this in terms of immediate impact of the initiative, intermediate outcomes, and recommendations for the future, based on course content, delivery mechanisms and the future roll out, including trainer support.

Task

The objectives of the research related to obtaining both trainer and participant views regarding a range of training course-related issues including support mechanism for training delivery and participant learning and application.

Assignment

We collated the views of 40 participants in the statutory, non-statutory, and private sectors at training courses held in Glasgow, Fife, and Tayside. In addition, comments were obtained from trainers. Questionnaires were used for baseline and end course self-assessments. Telephone interviews were used for post course follow up.

Findings

Our findings indicated that almost all respondents benefited in some way from taking part in the training. This was especially the case for increased knowledge and confidence. This compares quite significantly with pre-course views where competence levels were perceived to be fairly low.
