The Every Child Matters vision is to create a fully integrated system of services so that all children get the best start during their early years. We have provided a range of services in the early years and childcare sectors.This has included:

• examining standards of nursery education
• exploring supply-side and demand-side factors in delivering accessible, affordable and quality childcare provision
• research in the extended schools arena including breakfast and after-school clubs and out of hours provision
• evaluation of the delivery and impact of language and play programmes, parenting programmes and schemes such as Books For Babies
