Enterprise and Economic Development

We offer a range of services in this field to public and private sector clients. In addition to providing general economic and labour market expertise, our principle specialisms fall into three areas:

Our team has a strong background in both academia and industry, with an extensive knowledge of analytical techniques and experience of conducting consultations with key players in the Scottish economy and investment market.

Economic impact studies assess the way in which a project, policy or business affects the economy, whether local, regional or national.

Quantitative estimates of employment and income are provided, as well as a qualitative assessment of wider economic benefits. While there is no single approach to this type of analysis, we combine best practice in following generally accepted principles with a clear understanding of the project’s purpose from the client brief.

We have established a reputation as the leading investment market analysts in Scotland, having recently completed the annual Risk Capital Market Report for Scottish Enterprise. We combine a thorough understanding of market analysis techniques with a wide and deep knowledge of the Scottish risk capital scene and the business environment.

In addition to Scotland-wide market analysis, we have undertaken a number of industry sector studies for clients, including the Scottish Food and Drink, Tourism and Life Science sectors. We also undertake specific labour market analysis for the production of our Labour Market Bulletins.

Our approach is to consult with industry participants in order to ground statistics in reality, and make conclusions as relevant as possible. In addition to public sector clients, we are keen to undertake work for private sector clients with an interest in the structure and performance of industry sectors.

Key projects undertaken in this area of work include:

  • Scoping Phase of Scottish Life Science Investment Trends and Opportunities Database (Scottish Enterprise, 2006-07)
  • Economic Impact of Diageo in Scotland (Diageo plc, 2006)
  • Investment Funding in the Scottish Food and Drink Industry: a Baseline Analysis (Scottish Enterprise, 2007)
  • Investment in the Scottish Tourism Industry (Scottish Enterprise, 2007 - current)
