Local Government

The period since 1997 has seen a wide-ranging process of modernisation in UK Local Government. As a member of the Local Government Modernisation Agenda Research Framework Agreement for Communities and Local Government, we have worked extensively on this reform process. Our work with and for local government has focused on two particular areas - finance, and service delivery.

Recent projects include:
  • a six-year evaluation of the development of capital strategies and asset planning by local authorities in England (DCLG)
  • a review of the role of property owners in Business Improvement Districts (DCLG)
  • a series of analyses of local government expenditure on adults and children's social services, environmental services, and cultural services, for the Local Government Association
  • in partnership with our Education, Children and Young People Team, a study of the training and development needs of local leaders and managers of Children's Services (Department for Children, Schools and Families)

We have also undertaken a range of work with a focus on the role of local authorities and local strategic partnerships as leaders and shapers of place.
