Primary and Secondary Phases of Education

Our work in the primary and secondary phases of education spans a wide range of activity. Our research and evaluation focuses on issues of:

  • school improvement, self-evaluation and use of data to reach evidenced-based judgements
  • raising attainment and achievement - work in this field has included research to explore the effectiveness and impact of:
    • programmes to reduce pupil disaffection
    • catch-up programmes
    • initiatives to raise attainment at Key Stage 4
    • student mentoring and empowerment initiatives to raise aspirations
    • initiatives designed to promote pupils responsibility for learning, target-setting and achievement
    • reduced class sizes
  • education in non-traditional settings.This has involved research in the fields of home education and with the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community

In 2008 we conducted a longitudinal evaluation of the government’s New Relationship with Schools. This included evaluation of strands of activity such as school self-evaluation, School Improvement Partners and the School Profile.
